Share
Stains become permanent because of two things: time and heat. The faster you treat it, the easier it lifts. And for many stains (especially protein), hot water can set it.
The “first 60 seconds” rule
- Blot (don’t rub)
- Rinse cool if possible
- Apply stain remover
- Let sit 5–10 minutes before washing
Cheat sheet by stain type
Grease/oil:
- Pre-treat with stain remover
- Light scrub with a small brush
- Wash warm (check fabric care)
Coffee/tea:
- Rinse cool
- Spray stain remover
- Wash normally
Makeup:
- Blot gently
- Treat with stain remover
- Wash, then air-dry until confirmed gone
Odors (gym, smoke, musty):
- Add laundry sanitizer/booster
- Don’t overload washer
- Dry fully to prevent mildew smell
The tool that makes stains easier
A small stain brush helps lift residue out of fibers without damaging the fabric. Keep it where you do laundry.
